Which dents this fixes, and which ones it doesn't
Paintless dent repair works on the dents that show up from everyday parking lots and driveways: a door ding from the car parked too close, a small round dent from a stray shopping cart, a shallow crease left by a soft impact. If the metal moved but the paint held, PDR is usually the right call.
It's not the answer for everything. Where the metal has creased sharply, where the paint has cracked or chipped at the dent itself, or where a repair has already been attempted with body filler, the panel needs traditional bodywork instead. Working metal from behind only helps if there's paint left intact on the other side worth protecting.

The technique is patient, not fast. A technician reaches the backside of the panel, through the door cavity or from underneath, and gently pushes and massages the metal back toward its original shape from behind, checking the surface as they go rather than sanding or filling from the front.
Because nothing gets sanded, filled, or repainted, there's no primer to cure, no color to match, and no clear coat to blend into the surrounding panel. The paint that was on the car when it rolled off the line is the same paint that's on it when the dent is gone.

Why keeping the factory paint matters
Factory paint is applied and cured under conditions a body shop can't fully replicate later, and a repaint, however good, is still a second layer with its own seam at the edge of the repair. Every panel that avoids that becomes one more part of the car that's never been touched, which matters at resale and matters to anyone who's particular about their paint.
